My Fantasy Author Life

Judith Ashley is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.

My Fantasy Author Life:
In many ways I live that right now. I love to write and the stories easily flow through me. I actually enjoy most of the revising and editing because I want my books to shine, to be the best I can write at the time. My workspace is inviting. The view out the window by my computer is inspiring—even in winter when the flowers and leaves are gone.
However to make My Fantasy Author Life complete this would happen:
Gabriella is dedicated to these women
The exact right word would always appear to show the reader the setting and character description.
Visceral Response and Body Language descriptions would flow where the reader needed it to stay within the context of the story but some things (just the right amount) would be left to the reader’s imagination.
Punctuation and grammar would be perfect.
Rose Quartz pillar next to computer
Tasks would cycle through in 20 – 25 minute time frames so I always get up and move around to keep myself limber and in shape.
And, I’d easily and effortlessly create exciting and engaging promotional campaigns that drew reader fans to my books.
My excitement and pleasure to be on Social Media would carry across the internet and everyone who saw my posts would become intrigued with my books (if they weren’t already).
My Master Mind Sisters
I’d spend at least an hour a day engaged with reader fans through emails and closed Facebook and Google groups building relationships.
My assistant would take care of all tasks I find onerous or boring leaving me to do only those tasks I really want to do.
Another one of Lois's displays
Lois, who creates fantastic displays
When I had an image in mind for a cover, blog post or newsletter, I easily found it (that’s not quite right, my assistant would easily find it because searching for images on the computer is not a task I like at all.

Finishing Books

Judith Ashley is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.
Another “finished” project is my first non-fiction book Staying Sane in a Crazy World. I started that book in September 2017 with the idea that I’d publish it in November or early December. I knew it wasn’t going to be a really long book because my message was simple.
Know your Core Values.
Know what you can control/change and what you can’t.
Plan #1: Craft a plan (and I give the reader the format to create their own personal staying sane plan) to accept the things they cannot change and over which they have no control.
Plan #2: Craft a plan to change the things they can or at least the part of whatever the challenge is that they do have some control of.
This month I plan on finishing my edits of Visions of Happiness and send it off to my First Reader, who will do just that. Read it and give me feedback, input about what she likes in the story and what doesn’t work. I won’t have it back from her by the end of the month—but I will have sent it on to her.
If all goes according to my schedule (and I almost snorted as I wrote that), I’ll start working on another long-term project. I’ve been going to bundle the books in The Sacred Women’s Circle series. First three (3) in one bundle. Last four (4) in another and all seven (7) in a third.
By the time I finish the Bundle’s Project, I should have Visions of Happiness back.
There is something delicious about seeing long-term projects come to fruition. I’ll be sending notices to my mailing list as these projects are completed. Everyone on my mailing list gets an early notification and a special pricing. If you aren’t already on my mailing list, you can sign up here.
Here’s more information about Staying Sane in a Crazy World. It is now available at your favorite e-retailer. By following the simple process outlined in this book, if you’ve unfinished projects that drive you crazy, you can create a plan to change that!

A Favorite Scene from "Lily"

Judith is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.
I’m doing something a bit different the next couple of Mondays by sharing favorite scenes from at least the first two books in the series Lily and Elizabeth.

We’ll see how it goes and maybe I’m make this a regular feature!

This is part of the chapter New Year’s Eve. Lily attends Jackson’s annual New Year’s Eve party to make sure his mother, Eleanor, doesn’t overdo. Jackson lured Lily under the mistletoe for an intoxicating kiss before the guests arrive.

The evening progressed with Jackson bringing friends over to introduce or reintroduce to Eleanor and he included Lily each time. A few of his friend asked her to dance and, at El-eanor’s insistence, she had. She was dancing a second time with Daniel, a slow number and with the number of people dancing, they were inching their way along, when she heard him curse.

“What’s wrong?” Lily strained to look around her but with the crush she could see nothing.

“I know for a fact, she wasn’t invited.” Daniel’s look was solemn, his tone serious.

And then through an opening of bodies Lily saw who he was referencing. Susannah had arrived and was now draped over Jackson. At least she’d describe it as draped. Was his arm around her? She couldn’t tell. Between the crowd of people and the ever-changing view as they moved slowly around the dance floor, she caught glimpses, bits and pieces but that was all.

A flash of heat blazed through her and for a moment she was under the mistletoe, locked in his embrace, her body melding with his. She stumbled, lurched against Daniel’s chest, and stepped on his feet.

“Don’t, Lily,” Daniel’s quiet voice was barely heard above the music and chatter. He squeezed her hand. “There’s nothing going on there. He hasn’t seen her since Thanksgiving. And I know for a fact, she wasn’t invited.”

Lily glanced over her shoulder at Jackson and Susannah. She saw Susannah’s arm around him, saw her reach up and kiss him. She couldn’t see if his arm was around her and she couldn’t tell if he kissed her back. Her stomach lurched and tightness crept through her body. All along she’d known she wasn’t Jackson Montgomery’s type. She gave herself a mental kick, reminding herself of her history of being drawn to men who were wrong for her.

However, as she and Daniel danced, her eyes seemed to move of their own accord, capturing vignettes of Susannah and Jackson. As the dance ended, she closed her eyes and immediately, on a visceral level, his lips were on hers, his arms encircled her body; their cocoon of heated energy swirled through her.

She opened her eyes and looked into Daniel’s concerned face. As he escorted her to Eleanor’s side he leaned toward her and whispered, “Don’t pay any attention to what’s going on over there.” He gestured with his head in the direction of Susannah’s loud, brittle laughter. “She doesn’t stand a chance against a class act like you.” He kissed her cheek and bent down to do the same to Eleanor.

“I’m the luckiest guy here with you two gorgeous gals for company.” He proved that he meant it because he lounged against the window and kept up a running chatter to distract the two women from the scene across the room. Every few minutes, Susannah’s shrill laughter pierced the air. After one particularly discordant sound, he leaned down toward Eleanor and pitched his voice low. “She’s been drinking. I’m going to see what I can do avert disaster.”

Lily and Eleanor had front row seats before the large flat screen television as the clock began striking midnight.

“One minute to go.” Eleanor’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “I love seeing the old year out and the New Year in.” She leaned over and confided to Lily, “every year I feel the power of turning away from the old and embracing the new.”

Suddenly their view of the screen was blocked. Jackson stood before them. Bending over he put his hand on the outside arm of Lily’s chair effectively blocking her from getting up. As the countdown continued he leaned closer to Eleanor, looking at her with such tenderness, saying softly that he was so glad she was with him here in Fremont. As the clock started to strike twelve, he kissed Eleanor on each cheek. His eyes shifted to Lily, his gazed heated and he straightened. While the clock still chimed, he wrapped his hands around hers and pulled her into his arms.

“And, I’m very glad you’re a part of my life,” he whispered as he bent to kiss her. This time it was soft and brief. Leaning back while not letting her go, he looked deeply into her eyes and then lowered his head for a kiss that was no longer soft and brief but hard and long.

Lily found herself clinging to Jackson’s broad shoulders, felt his strong arms holding her tightly, pulling her closer until there was nothing between them except fire burning deep inside. She clung to him and as he deepened the kiss, passion’s flame leapt within.

“Really, Jackson! How could you!” the shrill voice shrieked. “You bitch! You think you can get him by being nice to his Mommy? Well, I’ve got news for you!”

Jackson fought his way up from the drugging impact of Lily’s kiss. He turned, effectively blocking Lily from Susannah’s sight.

“Get out of my house, Susannah. Now,” he growled in an ice-tinged voice. When she just stood there, mouth open, star-ing at him, he pointed toward the door. “Now,” his frost-laden voice matched his frigid glare.

“You can’t mean that, Jackson. Surely you don’t mean you want me to leave.” Susannah tossed her head, her long burgundy-red hair swirling around her, an expression of disbelief etched on her features and mirrored in her leaf- green eyes. “You can’t be serious.”

She moved toward Jackson, a look of seduction on her face, her hips tilted at a suggestive angle, her voice a husky whisper. “Remember how it is between us, Jack-son? You know how much I can please you.”

“I want you out of my house, Susannah, now.” Jackson’s finger stabbed toward the door, his voice a dangerously low growl. “Now!” His jaw clenched as he visibly held back seething anger.

Daniel stepped forward, took Susannah by the arm and turned her toward the door. “Come on, Susannah. Let’s get out of here. We can find someplace else to party, someplace that’s not so stuffy.” He looked over his shoulder at Jackson and mouthed, “You owe me,” as he led a stunned and uncharacteristically silent Susannah out of the house.

Jackson turned and gathered Lily in his arms. “I’m so sorry, so sorry,” he whispered as he caressed her back and rained soft kisses in her hair. “She crashed, Lily. If I’d ever thought anything like this would’ve happened, I’d have kicked her out when she first showed up.”

“I’m all right, Jackson,” Lily murmured. His large hands ranged up and down her back leaving warmth and flickers of heat behind. “Really, I’m all right.”

And, those words were true, she was all right. So lost in their kiss it had taken a minute before she realized what was happening. Staring at his broad shoulders, hearing the steely determination in his voice as he ordered Susannah out of his house was truly a surreal experience. It had always been her job to protect, to put her body between danger and the vulnerable.

Safe and frightened. The strange mix of emotions churned through her. In that moment when he’d first taken her in his arms, she had felt safe, safer than she had for almost two decades — truly safe, and — it frightened her.

Practicing What I Teach Or Is It Preach?

Judith is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.
Unconditional support has been the topic this month. It isn’t always easy to take care of yourself and there are times when you may decide on a short term basis (as in a few hours or maybe a day or two) to put the other person’s needs ahead of your own. But the bottom line remains: taking care of ourselves is primary if we truly want to be at our best in supporting the people we care about.

This month I’ve faced that test several times and, to be honest, have not always practiced what I “preach”. However within 24 – 36 hours I’ve reminded myself of the truth of what I teach.

When I don’t take care of myself, I really am not at my best and therefore I truly am not able to support my friend(s) in the way I most want to.

Without sleep, my energy is low and my mental acuity isn’t at its sharpest.

Without eating properly, my energy is low and my brain functioning suffers as do my reflexes.

Combine the two and my mood suffers. My ability to “go with the flow” and interject the appropriate response to difficult behavior is disruptive. At its worst I become part of the problem instead of part of the solution.

Upon reflection I can see I'm my own best advertisement for following my advice to Take Care Of Yourself First!

Next month I’ll be sharing ideas on creating a life with Unconditional Love flowing through it. In the meantime, consider as we head in to the holiday season that is usually fraught with peril (I love that phrase), what your plan is to take care of yourself.

As always please share!

A Tale of Two Friendships

Judith is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.
This week I want to share a story with you. It isn’t about any of my books or even a topic I’ve dealt with in any of my books or short stories – maybe someday but not yet.

I’ve two friends I met in 1980 who have “memory loss” or “dementia.” They have different forms of cognitive decline. (I learned there are 30 different types of dementia while talking to the primary care doctor of one of them). But back to my story.

I unconditionally accept that both of these exceedingly bright people have dementia/memory loss.

I unconditionally accept that it shows up differently in each of them – but that does not make the diagnosis less accurate.

I unconditionally accept that I will remain their friend until their death even beyond the time when they no longer really know who I am.

Now to unconditional support.

One of my friends lives in the same community I do. When his wife was dying she asked me to watch out for him. I agreed. After her death, he asked me to help him. I agreed. This past year has been fraught with all sorts of challenges as I’ve attempted and at times succeeded in supporting him.

In some ways it is easier with him being nearer. I can stop by and talk to him, see his physical reaction, talk to staff (yes, I assisted him in moving to a protected living situation so he’d be safer). He also says he has dementia and while not thrilled with the diagnosis, he has made peace with it.

Sunset on the Oregon Coast - a place we all love
My other friend lives two thousand miles away. I talk to her on the phone at least once and usually twice or three times a month but I’ve not been back to visit for a little over two years.

We spoke on the phone last night and she was distressed. She’d heard there was a new drug on the market and she’d called her doctor to ask about having it prescribed for her. When she was told there was nothing to be done for her, she told me she cried and cried and cried.

Part of her story was that the receptionist or medical assistant told her in what was, to her, a harsh tone of voice. So, being who I am, I asked her “If it was true that there was nothing that could be done, how would she want that information told to her?”

I ended up asking the question two more times because she just didn’t seem to understand it.

However, when she answered it, I understood it wasn’t her memory loss (that’s the only term she can use to reference her cognitive decline) that was the problem.

She is unable/unwilling to accept that there is nothing that can be done. She believes as long as studies are being done, researchers are seeking cures, there is a chance that the progress of her disease can be halted.

Knowing this, understanding this gives me a different way to unconditionally support her. I won’t be asking her the kinds of questions that create that dissonance for her, the ones where she faces the answer she doesn’t want.

She said “Why would I want to live if I knew there was no hope and I’d become a vegetable, unable to care for myself, unable to enjoy anything?”

Of course she would not want to live under those circumstances and knowing her for 37 years I totally understand that.

Lily helps vulnerable adults
As her memory fails, she is becoming more isolated. I can keep in regular contact with phone calls and cards.

As her memory fails (the past 10 – 15 years have faded to almost nothing). I can listen and reminisce with her about the trips and other events we’ve shared.

As her memory fails, I can remain her friend even when she isn’t sure who I am I can still show up in her life.

These are just two examples of people I unconditionally accept as they are and unconditionally support as best I can.

Please share your thoughts in the comments section so we can have a conversation.

At Last Meet Gabriella and Sophia

Judith is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.

Drum roll!!!! Meet Gabriella Maria Moncrief and Sophia Camila Denton Stewart.

Gabriella: Chaos and Symmetry

Crawling out of the gutter to build a life off the streets takes stamina, courage and guts. Gabriella knows it takes even more because no matter how far away you’ve crawled, the gutter still clings to you.
How do you heal from childhood abuse? How can you accept love when you see yourself as unlovable?
Wow!!! What I had to learn to bring Gabriella’s spiritual path into focus in this book. I detail my journey in Gabriella’s Sacred Geometry.
I’m also indebted to Mikhaela Asheena who spent time talking to me about sacred geometry. Check out her amazing Sacred Geometry Patterns here!
Sophia: Every Ending Is A Beginning
Having loved and lost once in her life, Sophia guards her heart. But even though Cam is surrounded in darkness, she sees a glimmer of light and she is attracted to him.
When you’ve personal knowledge of the pain of the death of a loved one, how do you put your heart on the line again?
Ever heard of the ‘blue bird of happiness’? Sophia’s personal totem is the blue bird. Happiness seems beyond her when a longtime friend dies. Nothing brings her the joy she so easily manifested even a few months earlier.
Sophia might follow the Wheel of Life but that is much different than risking her heart in a relationship with someone whose very profession courts death. Is NOW enough? My thoughts on writing Sophia and Now.
~~~
I’ve been asked if I have a favorite character or story. At one point my answer was the one I was working on. With all seven of the original series available in digital and print and I look back on the stories of The Circle, I can honestly say “No, I don’t have a favorite.”
However I do have favorite scenes in each book, favorite bits of dialogue, favorite threads or maybe even themes. But those are topics for another day — or not.
Turning the tables, I’m asking you:
Which is your favorite and why?
What speaks to you about the lives of these women?
And, I’m encouraging you to share your thoughts here and in a review at your favorite e-retailer?
Meet Ashley and Hunter
Judith is the author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic fiction that honors spiritual practices that nourish the soul and celebrates the journey from relationship to romance.
This week you get to know Ashley Ann Carlyle Kenner and Hunter Knight Compton as well as read more about my writing journey. Enjoy!
Ashley: Dragonflies and Dreams
Darkness threatens Ashley’s life as she once again faces a battle with breast cancer. The only light? Her children, the unconditional support of her women’s circle and dragonflies. But is it enough for her to win back her life and find unconditional love?
How do we keep going when all seems lost? How do we keep going when the odds are against us? How do we accept support and love when our youth and beauty fades, when we are ravaged with disease?
Writing about recurrent breast cancer took some research and soul searching. I’ve had cancer and also had breast cancer scares. Read more about my own journey in “Writing Ashley’s Story.”
Where do the dragonflies come into the picture? Ashley must call upon her personal totems the dragon and damselflies to find the light in the darkness of her life. When you finish reading Ashley: Dragonflies and Dreams you’ll have a new appreciation for the power of belief.
Hunter: The Drum and The Dancer
From the moment Hunter felt the first flutter of life, her actions have focused on her daughter’s safety. She’s created a good life for them doing what she loves—dancing. When her past shows up at her dance studio, she risks losing her daughter forever.
Where do we find the courage to confront our past and our mistakes? How do we move past doubts to know with a certainty we can trust another? And what about ourselves? What price do we pay when we doubt our every decision?
Check out “Dancing With Hunter” to see how I wrote a story that had little basis in my own life. A leap of faith was needed more often than not!
And I love Hunter’s cover. The drum reminds me of my own horse drum – one I made with my own hands from a horse hide. The sound reverberates through me and sometimes I just drum for the pure please of feeling the beat in my bones.
